Chinese rose: growing and caring at home. Features of growing a Chinese rose (hibiscus) and rules for caring for a plant How to plant a shoot of a Chinese rose at home

Chinese rose belongs to the genus Hibiscus, therefore in everyday life it is called that. The plant is an easy-to-maintain evergreen shrub that reaches a height of 3 m. Its homeland is the south of China, but the flower grows successfully in other regions with a tropical and subtropical climate. Used in landscape design how ornamental plant... To date, many new varieties have been bred with interesting shapes and shades of colors - pink-porcelain, ivory, lilac, rich crimson.

Hibiscus is essentially a tree, although some species are classified as shrubs. Belongs to the Malvov family (in total, it includes about 300 species). Hibiscus can be of different origins - some of them are imported from the New World (the so-called "Floridians"). In Russian climatic conditions v open ground only two beautifully flowering species can grow - the Syrian and triple hibiscus, and the Chinese rose is grown at home or in a greenhouse. Many people confuse it with another plant - garden hibiscus. But the latter is a hybrid that was bred in the 1950s and can actually be grown in the garden, while the Chinese rose in temperate latitudes is always an indoor variety.

Chinese hibiscus looks quite impressive due to its dark green leaves, smooth and shiny, and large flowers, which reach 16 cm in diameter. Despite the name, the plant has nothing to do with real roses. Its flower has an interesting shape, more like a mallow. In natural conditions, it blooms in March, the plant blooms until October.

Nevertheless, Chinese hibiscus is quite demanding on temperatures - in summer it feels comfortable only if it is more than +25 degrees outside, and in winter - at +12 ° C.

Reproduction

Growing and reproducing hibiscus at home is possible in several ways:

  1. 1. Seeds. This is not the most common method, but it is productive, since the seeds give a lot of shoots. It is recommended to plant them at the end of February. Before planting, the seeds must be disinfected with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and then washed with water. After that, you need to lower them into a container with a growth stimulator for a day. The material is then kept in damp gauze and unrolled once a day to give access to fresh air... When sprouts appear, they need to be planted in a mixture of soil, ash, sand and peat. In the future, you can plant seedlings in separate containers or plant them on the site (the strongest specimens).
  2. 2. Cuttings. This is the most popular way to help propagate the plant at home. Cuttings are selected and cut back in the spring, then treated with a growth stimulant and placed in a container with water. When the roots appear, you can plant them in a container in which a mixture of soil, peat and humus is preliminarily prepared. Rooting takes place within a month. When young shoots grow up, they are pinched to give the bush a beautiful shape.
  3. 3. Dividing the bush or layering. This is a rather complicated method. It is rarely used at home, but in theory, the procedure can be carried out when growing hibiscus in the garden, carefully separating the shoots from the main bush with a sharp tool.

Growing features

To keep a Chinese rose at home, you need a pot that is large enough, but not too spacious. If there is too much space in the container, the grower will end up with a lot of leaves, but there will be few flowers. When grown in a pot, Chinese hibiscus is recommended to be replanted annually, choosing a new container a couple of centimeters wider than the previous one.

The Chinese rose prefers slightly acidic soils with a pH of 6.8. It is imperative to include sod soil (4 parts), deciduous (2 parts), humus (1 part), sand (1 part) in the composition of the soil.

At the bottom of the pot, you need to lay out a drainage layer for which clay shards, broken brick or stones are suitable. This is necessary in order to prevent stagnation of water at the root system and to avoid rotting.

If it is not possible to transplant hibiscus, you need to carefully cut its roots by a third, and then change the soil in the pot to a new one every 3 years.

Transplanting a Chinese rose is straightforward. The only caveat is that you need to do a preliminary pruning, remove shoots without leaves and dried branches, and cut the rest by half.

Care

Careful care for hibiscus is necessary mainly in the initial stages. For a young plant, the formation of a beautiful bush is of particular importance. This is done by trimming. You need to remove weak shoots, leaving no more than a couple of centimeters from the buds. If a small hibiscus is grown for decorative purposes, pruning and shaping the bush will require a lot of effort, since you will have to trim almost the entire crown. Otherwise, the plant will direct all its forces to the growth of shoots, and not to flowering.

Pruning is desirable in the cold season - at the very end of winter or early March, while the hibiscus has not started to grow. Spring pruning also has health benefits. Some growers prefer to do this in the fall, when the plant has bloomed. You need to cut off exactly those branches on which flowers bloomed in the current year.

When conducting spring pruning it must be remembered that the flowers of Chinese hibiscus usually bloom on the tops of shoots that are at least three months old.

When a plant is in bloom, it needs more natural light. It is necessary to find such a place so that the direct rays of the sun do not fall on the flower, otherwise the leaves of the bush will dry out. It is recommended to feed the hibiscus during the flowering period. It is not necessary to use fertilizers - you can take 1 tsp. sugar, dilute it with warm water (200-250 ml) and add to the root.

V hot weather the plant needs additional moisture. Watering should be regular, but not too abundant. This means that watering a Chinese rose can only be done after the soil under the plant has completely dried out. If the drought lasts long enough, the hibiscus will need to be watered daily.

In winter, the plant has a dormant period. At home, it can be kept on an unheated, but insulated outside and glazed balcony - these are quite comfortable conditions for a flower. In the southern regions, some varieties remain to winter in the ground, while they must be covered with special agrotextiles for the cold season. If there is no such fiber, spruce branches can be used.

Potential problems and pests

Hibiscus is very resistant to insects and diseases. But if the summer is hot and dry, it can be attacked by aphids, spider mites and thrips. To get rid of pests, the site owner will have to double-treat the plant with insecticides. For this, drugs such as Fitoverm, Karbofos, Aktellik are used, and the interval between their applications should be 7-10 days.

Hibiscus grown in the garden is prone to chlorosis. The plant's lower leaves fall off, and those that grow in this place have a yellowish tint almost from the very beginning. The reason for the disease is that the soil in the garden contains too little iron and nitrogen, so they are added to the soil in addition, adding iron chelate to the water left for irrigation (in the dosage set by the manufacturer).

Gardeners who grow hibiscus most often face the following problems:

  1. 1. Leaves turn yellow. This happens not only with chlorosis, but also in cases where the root system of the plant is injured (most often during transplantation). If the cause was mechanical damage, then drugs like Zircon or Kornevin are added to the water for irrigation - with exact observance of the amount specified in the instructions. Such a composition can also be used with water for spraying leaves, but no more than 2-3 drops of the product per 0.5 l of liquid. Sometimes hibiscus leaves turn yellow from the heat - in this case, you need to adjust the watering regime.
  2. 2. The plant does not bloom. This problem is most often associated with a lack of boron and phosphorus. This conclusion can only be reached if all the rules of agricultural technology are observed, the Chinese rose grows in a spacious, bright area, but there are still no flowers. If the shoots have slowed down growth, it means that there is not enough nitrogen in the soil. Top dressing applied on time will ensure lush and long-lasting flowering.
  3. 3. Leaves are falling. It should be noted that this happens quite often in autumn and is considered a natural phenomenon. If the leaves fall in summer, spring or autumn, this is a signal that the plant is suffering from excessive watering or, conversely, from a lack of water. The problem may also be that the root of the plant is injured during transplantation. The easiest way to fix the problem is to adjust the watering.

Chinese rose, or in other words hibiscus - widespread indoor plant, which is very much loved for it beautiful flowers and unpretentiousness. This species, although it is able to withstand severe frosts, does not have time to bloom in the climate of the middle zone. It is grown in gardens only in the southern regions. In areas with cold weather, there is nothing left but to plant a Chinese rose at home.

About the Chinese rose

Hibiscus is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to 6 m in nature. The flowering of the Chinese rose is quite long, which is another of its positive quality... The genus has 250 species, one of which is cultivated as a house plant. The homeland of the Chinese rose is Southeast Asia, and other types of hibiscus can be found in the wild in Africa, America and the Pacific Islands.

About growing a Chinese rose at home

Indoor varieties of Chinese roses can be grown even by beginners. When cold weather sets in, hibiscus should be placed in a well-lit place. Low light is fine too, but the rose won't bloom. The temperature must be maintained at + 20 ° C. And if it is lowered to + 5 ° C, then flower buds will be better laid. But this is not necessary, if conditions do not allow, then the hibiscus is left to winter at + 20 ° C.

Chinese rose

As soon as the warm summer weather sets in, the Chinese rose is taught to the sun - transferred to the balcony, and then moved to the garden. It is necessary to cover the hibiscus from bright sunlight, otherwise burns will appear on the leaves.

Ease of care, one of the qualities for which hibiscus is valued. It is important to observe the lighting and watering regime, then the plant will delight with large bright flowers. There are certain rules for caring for a Chinese rose:

  • It is necessary to ensure that the soil is not overdried - in the summer there is quite frequent watering, every 2-3 days, and in the winter, just watch that the earthen lump is moist;
  • In a pot with a plant, you need to make good drainage so that the water does not stagnate;
  • Hibiscus needs frequent spraying from a sprayer, especially if the indoor air is dry. The main thing is not to fall on the flowers, otherwise they will begin to fall off;
  • It is better for the water to settle before watering;
  • During flowering, the rose is fed once every 10 days with a complex fertilizer, and from autumn it is necessary to reduce the dose of nitrogen in the dressing;
  • In the spring, hibiscus is transplanted into a nutrient earth mix... It is difficult to replant large plants, so they simply replace the topsoil;
  • After the plant is transplanted, it is pruned so that new shoots with flowers develop;
  • In the fall, the Chinese rose grows and stretches - it is shortened by a third. If pruning is done in early March, then the shoots are removed to half the length.

Note! During the hibiscus transplant, if there is no desire to increase the green part of the flower, the volume of the pot is left the same.

With improper care, various pests, especially aphids, may appear on the hibiscus. Frequent spraying will help protect against these insects. Hibiscus can also be susceptible to various diseases such as infectious and non-infectious chlorosis, bacterial spotting, and brown rot. The most common care mistakes that lead to illness:

  • a Chinese rose stands in a draft or in direct sunlight;
  • too frequent watering, provoking root rot;
  • dry indoor air or too heat air;
  • dustiness of leaves;
  • there is no regular spraying, this is especially important in summer weather;
  • use for irrigation of poor quality water with various impurities;
  • insufficient lighting;
  • excessive fertilization;
  • insufficient feeding and lack of regular spring transplants;
  • contact with diseased plants.

If these mistakes are avoided, the Chinese rose will grow healthy and strong, delighting with regular flowering.

How to root a Chinese rose at home

The Chinese rose reproduces well by cuttings. The shoots remaining after pruning the hibiscus in the spring are well suited for this purpose. Sections are treated with growth stimulants and placed in water. You can also leave them in a mixture of peat and sand, covering them on top, for example, with a jar.

Rose cuttings

The shoot develops a white growth where the roots begin to appear. After a month, they begin to sprout, then the cutting is planted in the ground and pinched the top so that the hibiscus bushes.

Note! A plant can be transplanted into a pot, which has formed roots of 5-7 cm and a couple of new leaves.

If the spring stalk is well-rooted, it may even bloom after 2 months. To propagate the hibiscus, the top of the plant cut in mid-summer can also be used.

How to properly plant a Chinese rose with a shoot and seeds at home

Usually, perennials are not propagated by seed, but the Chinese rose is an exception. This method suits her perfectly. Rose seeds from China have good germination, which lasts for 6 years and can germinate easily. The very procedure for such reproduction is very simple. There are several guidelines on how to germinate rose seeds from China. Sow it in late February or early March. The step-by-step landing algorithm is as follows:

  1. First, the seeds are disinfected for 30 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate, then washed and soaked for a day in a growth stimulator. In this case, care must be taken that the liquid does not completely cover them, and there is access to oxygen;
  2. Next, the seeds are placed in wet gauze for germination. They must be kept moist and warm;
  3. The seeds will germinate in about 3 days. They are seated in plastic glasses filled with sand, peat and ash. The main thing is to make sure that the root of the plant grows straight and does not bend;
  4. Sprouted seeds are placed in the soil, sprinkled a little on top and covered with paper or film;

Note! In order to successfully germinate hibiscus, you need good lighting, but without direct sunlight.

The easiest way to reproduce, as for all perennials, is to plant a Chinese rose with a shoot. Cuttings are placed for rooting in water or a specially prepared soil composition. A month later, the roots will appear at the processes.

How to plant a homemade Chinese rose

To plant a Chinese rose with shoots, you need:

  • take a stem with a diameter of about 0.5 cm;
  • cut off the top at a distance of 15 cm and remove the leaves from the bottom;
  • plant in a container;
  • put in a place with good lighting;
  • produce moderate and regular watering.

To make an annual transplant of a Chinese rose, a fertile mixture of turf and leaf land, humus and sand. For young hibiscus, peat is also added. Expanded clay or brick fragments are placed at the bottom of the pot in order for drainage to take place. To less traumatize the roots, hibiscus from one pot is placed in another by transferring.

Chinese rose transplant

Hibiscuses are also planted by dividing the bush, but this method is used mainly for garden plants. The best time for the procedure is spring. Depending on the size of the bush, a knife, pruner or saw is used. Before dividing, the blades are disinfected, for example, with alcohol.

Note! By dividing, you can propagate Chinese roses that had at least 2 stems last season.

The bush is dug up, the earth is shaken off and, without damaging the extra roots, the trunks are separated. Then these shoots, which must necessarily have at least a few roots, are planted in pots with earth and compost. Water regularly, but in moderation.

Further care

Young sprouts of the Chinese rose are looked after in the same way as adult plants. When the rose grows, the old stems are removed, leaving new ones. Weeds are removed and the soil is loosened. Top dressing is needed during the period of active growth, from June to September. The fertilizer should have a high phosphorus content. In the fall, potash mixtures are introduced to prepare the hibiscus for wintering.

The Chinese rose is a spectacular and unpretentious houseplant that is also easy to propagate. The shape of the bush can be varied by pinching. Hibiscus with its large flowers will decorate any home.

The Chinese rose is a type of hibiscus introduced to Europe from Asia and the Pacific Islands. Today it is one of the most beautiful indoor large-sized trees, extremely popular in Europe, despite the many bad omens associated with Chinese hibiscus. And these superstitions were invented by the Europeans themselves.
In Argentina, it is considered bad form not to have at least one hibiscus in the house. In India, the Chinese rose is used to make bridal wreaths, and in Hawaii and Haiti, hibiscus is a national symbol.

Plant Chinese rose, or Chinese hibiscus (Latin Hibiscus rosa-sinensis)- one of the most popular species in the culture of the genus Hibiscus of the Malvov family. The genus of hibiscus has about two hundred species, but Chinese hibiscus has become the most popular in home floriculture. The Chinese rose flower began its triumphant spread over the subtropical and tropical regions of the Earth, in which it has long and successfully taken root, from the south of China and the north of Indochina. The popularity of this plant is so great that in Malaysia, for example, the Chinese rose hibiscus, called Bungaraya, is one of the country's symbols depicted on coins. In countries where the climate does not allow growing Chinese rose flowers in gardens, they are cultivated as greenhouse or indoor plants.

Homemade Chinese rose - description

From time to time, the Chinese rose is watered, after which the top of the pot is covered with a mat or paper bag to keep moisture in the soil longer. In the spring, the pot with the plant is exposed to bright, diffused light and gradually increase the watering to the usual rate to stimulate the growth of young shoots.

Reproduction of the Chinese rose at home

As we have already found out, the Chinese rose reproduces well by seeds. How to propagate a Chinese rose vegetatively, for example, by cuttings? It is best to use the cuttings of the Chinese rose left after the spring pruning of the plant for rooting. Treat the sections with a growth stimulant - Kornevin or Heteroauxin - and place the cuttings for growing roots in water or plant in a mixture of sand and peat, covered with a glass jar on top.

Rooting will take place within three to four weeks, after which the cutting is planted in the soil for a Chinese rose and pinched to stimulate tillering. Rooted spring cuttings in good lighting can even bloom in a couple of months. Apical cuttings can also be used for grafting. with two or three internodes, cut in July or August.

Chinese rose pests and diseases

Harmful insects and diseases of the Chinese rose

Of the pests, thrips, aphids and spider mites are dangerous to the Chinese rose, and the invasion of these insects is usually due to your violation of the rules for caring for the plant, and most often the main reason is too dry air. Place the plant on a tray with a wet stone, start spraying the leaves with settled water at room temperature to eliminate the conditions favorable for the life of these insects; twice with an interval of two weeks treat the plant with hot pepper infusion with soap that destroys insects, and if the infection is too strong, you will have to apply the treatment with Actellik solution in the same mode at the rate of 15 drops per liter of water.

Sometimes growers complain that the leaves of the chinese rose turn yellow... The reason for this may be a disease such as chlorosis, which occurs due to the increased content of calcium and chlorine in the water used for irrigation. The water must be defended and, before watering, add iron chelate to it in the amount indicated in the instructions.

Chinese rose turns yellow

If you irrigate with settled water of the desired temperature, but for some reason the leaves of a Chinese rose still turn yellow, the reason for this may be too abundant moisture in the soil for a long time. If there are few yellow leaves, just cut back on watering, you can even replace it temporarily by spraying the leaves. But if the leaves turn yellow massively, you will have to transplant the plant into new soil by examining the root system and removing rotten roots.

Another reason why the Chinese rose turns yellow may be in insufficient light for the normal growth of the plant - in this case, you can observe a real leaf fall. There are other reasons why hibiscus turns yellow.

Chinese rose fall

The leaves of the Chinese rose also fall from drafts and a sharp temperature drop. If you want to preserve the plant, immediately eliminate the deficiencies in the care, because it is not difficult at all. But do not sound the alarm if the plant loses only a few leaves - for a deciduous plant, this is quite normal.

Chinese rose dries

If you water the plant properly and the leaves still dry, this may be the plant's reaction to a change of location. The leaves of the frozen plant also dry out. Give him time to recover and warm up.

In the photo: Yellow hibiscus

Chinese rose withers

This is due to poor watering of the plant. Or it has not yet recovered from the transplant. But worst of all, if the problem is in the roots: carefully clean the roots from the soil, soak for half an hour in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and transplant into a small pot with light soil (add vermiculite to the usual soil for hibiscus) - maybe these measures will save your plant.

Chinese rose does not bloom

There are also several reasons why the Chinese rose does not bloom, but most often this is due to the excess nitrogen fertilizers in the soil, especially if the plant is healthy and has abundant foliage.

The plant also does not bloom:

  • when there is little light for him;
  • if you do not moisturize it enough during the active growing season;
  • in case of wintering in a too warm room.

For a Chinese rose to bloom, you need to exclude the listed reasons and correct others. possible mistakes in plant care.

Chinese rose - signs

The popularity of hibiscus sometimes serves him in disservice: various fables are told about this flower, and often mutually exclusive ones.

For example, some sources claim that the Chinese rose attracts many admirers to the house where the woman lives, while others also persistently warn against the destructive influence of hibiscus on the relationship between spouses and call the Chinese rose "muzhegon".

Some believe that Chinese rose - flower of death, since its untimely flowering predicts the imminent death of a person close to the owners of the plant. And if the leaves of a Chinese rose fall, this is a prognosis for an imminent serious illness of one of the household members.

It is noteworthy that all these negative opinions exist only in our country, and the rest of the world perceives the Chinese rose simply as an attractive and unassuming houseplant.

Hibiscus (Chinese rose) is a tall beautiful plant with large bright blooms of different colors. The beautiful flower is a favorite among experienced gardeners and amateurs alike. He is not whimsical in care and cultivation, and these are the main qualities of the rapid and unhindered growth of the plant.

How the Chinese rose blooms

The Chinese rose (indoor) is quite popular among flower growers, not only because of its easy maintenance, but also because of its beautiful flowers. They delight with their inflorescences for a short time, only two or three days. But on the bush, new opening buds constantly appear, one after the other. Therefore, it seems that hibiscus blooms for a long time. But this is provided that this bush is complete and healthy. A photo of a Chinese rose taken during the flowering period is a stunning sight.

The color scheme of the plant can be red and white, purple and orange, and one bud is able to combine two palettes. Nowadays, specialty stores offer low-growing varieties of hibiscus (hybrids of the Dutch species).

Growing a Chinese rose at home - the transplant stage

The main rules for growing a Chinese rose at home is its transplantation and reproduction. A young plant is transplanted in the spring into prepared soil. The flower loves fertilizers.

What is mixed for nutrient earth:

  • sod soil (4 kg);
  • deciduous soil (3 kg);
  • humus soil (1 kg);
  • sand (1 kg).

A drainage layer is placed in the container in which the hibiscus will be planted. The flower is fast growing, so the plant may need to be transplanted several times a year. Young shoots are cut off. Already the "adult" Chinese rose is not disturbed by transplants, but simply remove the top layer of soil and replace it with a nutritious one.

Growing process - propagation of a Chinese rose by cuttings

All plants have several methods of propagation.

How to breed hibiscus:

  • using seeds;
  • by dividing the bush;
  • layering;

Most often, cuttings are used as planting material. They are able to quickly release roots and grow. Propagation of a Chinese rose by cuttings is not a difficult process.

In any summer month, you need to cut off the top of the young shoot. It is important that there are at least two internodes on the planting material.

The cuttings must be treated with a growth stimulant and rooted in a container with prepared soil. Peat and humus can be added to the soil.

It is better if the transplanted cuttings grow in a warm temperature conditions(minimum 22 degrees, maximum - 25). Thirty days later, the young shoot will fully take root.

Top dressing for Chinese rose

Chinese rose (indoor) is very responsive to fertilizers. The plant is fed only in the warm season: in spring or summer. In cold weather, hibiscus can easily do without additional nutrients... Fertilizers are applied once every two weeks.

For feeding indoor flowers, there are a lot of complex "nutrition". They are best purchased at flower shops.

The composition of fertilizers should include the following elements:

  • potassium;
  • phosphorus;
  • nitrogen.

For the full growth of a Chinese rose, you need to feed its horse system, with a frequency of once a month. All fertilizers are best diluted in warm, settled water. Also, substances containing nitrogen should be sprayed with the greens of the plant. Do not let the solution get on the hibiscus flowers, this can lead to stains on them.

You should not "overfeed" or "underfeed" the flower with fertilizers, as the plant can die. It is because of this that the leaves of the Chinese rose turn yellow. Gradually, all the greens will fall off.

What to do when the castings of a Chinese rose turn yellow

If yellow spots began to appear on the leaves of the hibiscus, this means that the plant has undergone a disease. Over time, all the greens will begin to spin and dry, as a result, it will fall off and the flower will die.

Experienced growers know that best fight with flower diseases is prevention. To do this, it is worth treating a Chinese rose with disinfectants once a month.

Required Chinese Rose Care

Chinese rose care is required at a young age and during the flowering period. These two steps will ensure the healthy growth of a beautiful plant.

Caring for a transplanted cuttings is the formation of the crown. As soon as the planting material is completely rooted and began to gain height intensively, it should be pinched. Only in this case will the Chinese rose grow lush and blooming.

Hibiscus care during flowering:

  • providing a sufficient amount of sunlight (but not direct hits of rays on the leaves of the plant);
  • top dressing of the soil;
  • watering with warm water;
  • spraying.

As a fertilizer, you can use a mild sweet syrup of your own preparation. This requires one teaspoon of sugar and 250 grams of warm liquid. Mix the ingredients until completely soluble.

V summer time when the heat is intense, it is advisable to take the hibiscus (Chinese rose) to the balcony. Place it in a corner where there is no direct sunlight, but good daylight is available. These conditions will ensure abundant flowering.

The Chinese rose is a water-loving plant. Watering in the summer should be done frequently. You can do it every day - morning and evening. Also, the flower should be sprayed.

Pruning shoots has a beneficial effect on the growth and flowering of the Chinese rose. It is necessary to examine the bush and identify weak branches. They are cut off first, leaving only a two centimeters long shoot from the buds with leaves. They also cut the crown to make the flower decorative. If you cut the shoots correctly, then the plant will be lush and formed.

Chinese rose diseases

Improper care of the Chinese rose can lead to the appearance of diseases.

The most common diseases of the Chinese rose:

  • fungal infection;
  • spider mite;
  • felt maker.

Symptoms of a fungal infection include blackening of the leaves and drooping of buds. In order to avoid this disease, it is not necessary to overmoisten the soil, and also to prevent drafts and a sharp drop in temperature.

Aphids and felts are spread by dry air and improper watering.

Signs about the Chinese rose

Every florist has heard many signs about the Chinese rose. Many of them are negative, although there are also positive ones.

Signs about a Chinese rose:

  • growing a flower in the house where the family lives will bring quarrels between husband and wife;
