1.3 The journal "Book Science" is the organ of the Moscow Bibliographic Circle

For the first time in Russia, a monthly bibliographic publication began to be published not by an individual or a bookseller, but by a respectable scientific society - the Moscow Bibliographic Circle. The publication was headed by the founder of the Moscow Bibliographic Circle A.D. Toropov. In the article "From the Editor" he clearly defined the purpose of the new edition: "The Moscow Bibliographic Circle with its journal" Knigovedenie "should become an all-connecting and guiding center in the area that still has to create its own school, its own system." By the undeveloped area, the executive editor understood bibliography - an "essential" important auxiliary branch of knowledge dedicated to the book. " But this did not mean that the magazine was conceived as a narrow-branch one. As conceived by A.D. Toropov, "Journal of book printing in a broad sense (books, magazines, sheet music, drawings, photographs, etc.), with drawings and individual applications" was intended not only to contribute to the development of bibliographic science and practice, but also to expand the circle of persons interested in the book and engaged in bibliography, and hence its readership. The magazine needed a mug "for a lively exchange of thoughts with the mass of reading people."

The editorial staff's striving to go beyond the bibliography and cover related industries (the history and practice of library, publishing, bookselling and printing), thereby ensuring sufficient demand for the existence of the publication, was evidenced by its program, which everyone could familiarize themselves with by looking at the latter. cover page. It has four points.

Publishing program:

“I. Chronicle.

1) Complete lists of all newly published books in Russian in a systematic order, as well as notes, geographical maps, plans, engravings, etc .;

2) Complete catalogs of books on various industries knowledge, from the beginning of typography to the present;

3) Materials on bibliography in general.

II. Chronicle.

1) Government orders for the press;

2) Various articles on bibliography;

3) Library science;

4) Publishing and book-trade business;

5) Periodicals;

6) Printing technique;

7) Chronicle of the Moscow Bibliographic Circle.

III. Announcements in all languages.

IV. Applications ".

"Bibliology" offered the reader a plentiful bibliological material. In terms of the number of bibliographic lists printed in it, the journal had no equal.

Following the directive to make the journal "a kind of desktop reference publication for the general public," the editorial staff at the beginning of each issue "for current bibliographic information and to satisfy the general scientific-literary or scientific-technical curiosity of readers" places a "List of newly published books." The material is systematized in seven sections according to the scheme proposed by A.D. Toropov: religion, science, literature, art, craft and sports, bibliology, mixture.

The section "Bibliology" includes the headings "Bibliography" (new indexes, lists, catalogs are presented here), "Library and Book Publishing", "Typography" and "Archeography", which testifies to the understanding of bibliology as a complex discipline.

The editorial staff's desire to respond to the "need of the minute" is reflected in the headings "Popularization of scientific knowledge" in the "Science" section and "Current life" in the "Mixture" section: the first lists books containing information on topical problems of science, the second - materials that “ constitute a real spite of the day, attract everyone's attention ”, - about events in the field of culture, science, natural phenomena, disasters, etc.

In total, over the period of the journal's existence (1894-1897), more than 10 thousand titles were taken into account in the "List of newly published books", including 140 in the "Book Science" section.

In each issue, the content of the capital's newspapers and magazines was regularly and promptly written for last month or quarter, lists of peer-reviewed publications and authors of articles were printed.

But, soon after its release, despite the support of the Russian Bibliographic Circle and the publication of paid advertisements, the publication ran into material difficulties. The numbers start to double. Straighten. If in 1984 there were twelve issues in nine books, then in 1895 - in six books, and in 1896 - in only three, and the last issue (No. 3 - 12) was published in the following May, 1987. the magazine ceased to exist. But his task - to unite the forces of bibliographers with the aim of creating a Russian bibliographic school - was accomplished.
