After the feast of the Trinity, you can do something. Trinity: what can and cannot be done on this day. Divination by desire. Trinity

On Sunday, May 27, Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate the Day of the Holy Trinity. Archpriest ANDREY DUDCHENKO told "Apostrophe" what this holiday means, what traditions are customary to observe for it and what needs to be done on this day.

I congratulate all readers of "Apostrophe" on the great feast of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit and the day of the Holy Trinity! This holiday has several names in our tradition. Most people know the day of the Holy Trinity - this is a secondary name. The original name of the holiday is Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Why Pentecost?

This is the fiftieth day after Easter. The Feast of Pentecost dates back to the Old Testament. The people who lived according to the laws of the Old Testament had the feast of Pentecost, established by Moses after the exodus from Egypt. On the fiftieth day in the desert near Mount Sinai, the people received the law. God gave Moses commandments. This day of receiving the law, the fiftieth day after the exodus from Egypt, was celebrated as Pentecost.

In the New Testament, this day falls on the event that became the birthday of the Christian Church. This is the Descent of the Holy Spirit. After the Ascension, Jesus commanded his disciples not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait until what He promised from the Heavenly Father was fulfilled - to send them the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

And now, 10 days after the Ascension, the feast of Pentecost comes, when many people, fulfilling the law of the Old Testament, came to Jerusalem for the feast. Because every Jewish believer had a duty to come to Jerusalem for such great holidays as Easter, Pentecost and the Feast of Tabernacles (which is celebrated in the fall).

And part of the Jewish diaspora, which was very large in the entire Roman Empire, not every year, but at least once in some time, made a pilgrimage to a holiday to Jerusalem.

And on this day in Jerusalem at Pentecost, the apostles received the Holy Spirit. What does it mean? As the book of Acts of the Apostles describes, the Holy Spirit descended on them in the form of tongues of flame. That is, they heard a noise from heaven, and the grace of the Holy Spirit descended on them in the form of a flame. And the result was that they received the gift of preaching in other tongues. This was necessary so that people who came from everywhere heard the apostles preach in their language. Indeed, many of them no longer understood the language in which they read the holy books, which they spoke in Jerusalem.

On Pentecost, the Apostle Peter comes out in front of a large crowd of people and preaches. And he already boldly, fearlessly says that Jesus was resurrected, that Jesus is that promised Messiah, that King whom the Lord sent, he was resurrected and reigned over the world. And calls people to conversion. And on that day, several thousand people joined the first community of the Christian Church, the apostles. Therefore, this day is the birthday of the Church.

Why is the day of the Holy Trinity?

In the biblical story, we see the relationship between God and humanity. Up to this point, we have seen the action of God the Father, who was revealed through the prophets, through Moses, who led the people of Israel, and so on, gave commandments through Moses, through the prophets gave certain instructions. Then he sent his Son Jesus Christ, who preached, who died and rose again for us. And this is the third moment when the third person of the Holy Trinity - the Holy Spirit - comes to people, to the Church. And here this revelation for man is the revelation of the third person of the Holy Trinity, God as Trinity.

Therefore, this holiday is popularly known as the day of the Holy Trinity. For we knew the Father, we knew the Son, now we recognized the Holy Spirit. Three persons: one Deity, one glory, one kingdom. And we celebrate the birthday of the Church, the day of our joy. Because every Christian is a person who has communion with the Holy Spirit. And our personal Pentecost, our personal the reception of the Holy Spirit is when, after baptism, a person, becoming a Christian, receives the anointing with holy peace, which is the sacrament of the transmission of the reception of the Holy Spirit. When a person is anointed with the world after baptism, it says: "The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit." That is, a person receives the Holy Spirit.

Traditions for the Holy Trinity

Pentecost ends the great holiday period. Actually, the main holiday period of the year: 50 days from the Resurrection of Christ to Pentecost is a continuous holiday. Before Easter there was a period of fasting, Great Lent. It was 7 weeks of special preparation. Before Pentecost, before Trinity, there is no fast, but, firstly, there is a special day - this is the Saturday before Trinity, the parental memorial Saturday Trinity, when people commemorate the dead, when special funeral services are held, where everyone who died is remembered. Sometimes people come to commemorate those who are not remembered in the church on the very day of Trinity Sabbath. That is, it happens that they come and ask whether it is possible to remember the suicides on this day, or other questions arise.

Photo: lavra.ua

By the way, the church does not have any special day when you can commemorate suicides. And if a person, being conscious, really rejected the gift of life of his own free will, his own choice, then such people are denied a church burial, in a special prayer accompaniment. Actually, I think more with pedagogical purpose. In order for it to be a certain obstacle for others. Not because a person is deprived of the mercy of God, because no person is deprived of the mercy of God. The question is whether a person himself is ready to accept this God's gift of redemption and forgiveness. Does he need it? Is he asking for this? And this is such a mystery of the future fate of a person, where we cannot penetrate with our minds, understand this. Therefore, we are giving it up, as it were, into the hands of God.

But there is a memorial Saturday - this is such a special day. And when people are preparing for Easter, it is known that many come to confession and communion during Great Lent. Some go to communion once a year. these days. And it would be very good that we do not forget that Pentecost is also a great holiday. Of course, Easter, Resurrection is the most important event. But Pentecost is also one of the greatest holidays in the church calendar. Because a very serious, unique event is being celebrated - the Descent of the Holy Spirit. And it would be very good if these days people also prepare for confession and holy communion. It is not necessary to confess on this day. You can confess on Saturday or a few days before. And already on this day to come in order to partake of the Holy Mysteries.

The center of every church celebration is the Divine Liturgy. A service that reproduces what the Lord did at the Last Supper, the center of which is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Lord. This is the culmination of any church celebration. For example, it is not the consecration of the beads on Easter, not the consecration of the willows on Palm Sunday, but the joint meal of the Body and Blood of the Lord - this is the culmination. And the rest is already an addition, these are certain features that are characteristic precisely for this particular holiday. But the main moment, the pinnacle or core of everything, is when the cup with the Body and Blood of the Lord is brought out, and every believer is called to come to this meal. The Lord invites us all. Therefore, the best celebration would be if we all went these days to the communion of the Holy Mysteries. That would be the Christian way.

Do's and Don'ts on Trinity

You can do good. You know, in the Gospel we find many examples when Jesus Christ heals people on Saturday. And according to the Jewish law, which is God's law, you cannot work on Saturday, because this is a special day when you cannot do anything. And Jesus is reproached for this. Because he does it as if on purpose, demonstratively. Sometimes he does not just heal with a word, but takes, for example, saliva and mixes it with earth. And such a mixture will anoint the eyes of a blind man, for example. And this was a provocation for those who obeyed the law.

Why exactly this act was? Before the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, they were in slavery. Their job was to knead the clay and prepare the bricks. They saw that Jesus made this mixture of earth and saliva, like mixing clay, because it is slave labor. As if on purpose he was doing something that should not be done on Saturday. But the Lord does this to heal a person. He says: Saturday is for man, not man for Saturday. Therefore, on this day, you can do good.

There are people who work in jobs where they cannot refuse to work. Some work according to schedule, and the working day falls on Saturday. Why shouldn't they work? Or do they sin when they work? They don't sin. Because it is their responsibility. On this day, for example, someone must drive vehicles, monitor safety, provide light, water, and so on.

Of course, there are some things that cannot be postponed, and homework, for example, can be done on another day. The point of celebration is not not to do something, but to dedicate this day to God. And each person can devote this day to God in a certain way. This does not mean that you need to spend the whole day in prayer, in the reading of the Word of God, concentration and contemplation of some spiritual things. The moment of helping your neighbor is also very important. Deeds of charity towards others are also God's work, even more than some kind of sacrifice, donation to the church or the number of prayers that a person reads.

After all, it is through the attitude towards one's neighbor that love for God is tested. Therefore, you can do good to other people. You can, say, be a volunteer, help in a hospital, do something for the poor.

When a person, for example, is in a village, he works on the land six days a week. And he should devote this day to God, take a break from work. Break away from everyday life and make it a holiday. Spend this day with your family, children. Pay attention to parents with whom they are alive. It will be a good celebration. And do not do everything that can be postponed. If something cannot be postponed, it will not be a sin if this work is aimed at good!

One of the main Christian holidays - the Day of the Holy Trinity in 2018 is celebrated on May 27 - the Orthodox Church on this day remembers the gospel event - the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, which is described in one of the books of the New Testament.

The holiday does not have a specific date in the church calendar, as it is tied to the day of the celebration of Easter - it is celebrated on the 50th day after the Bright Resurrection of Christ.

Sputnik Georgia asked what signs are associated with the Day of the Holy Trinity, what can and cannot be done on this great holiday, which has one day of forefeast and six days of afterfeast.

Do's and Don'ts

According to folk traditions and superstitions, on the feast of the Holy Trinity, as on any other Orthodox holiday, you cannot perform various work - sewing, washing, washing, cleaning, etc. All household and household chores must be completed before the holiday.

It is especially strictly forbidden to work on the ground on holiday, including digging, planting and mowing grass.

Those who do not follow the old customs and violate the prohibitions, according to legends, can suffer significant damage. So, for example, for those who plow, livestock may die, for those who sow, the hail will beat the crops. And those who spin wool - sheep will get lost and so on.

On these days, you can prepare food for the festive table and feed and water cattle and domestic animals. On a holiday, the whole family decorates the house with branches of various trees, flowers and greens, consecrated in the church.

The feast of the Holy Trinity always falls on Sunday - on this day, believers in the morning try to attend a festive service in the church, partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ and devote time to prayer.

Is it possible to work for Trinity

In the old days, on the days of great holidays, people always tried to postpone all affairs, believing that this was not pleasing to the Lord, since the work, as a rule, did not argue and did not bring a positive result.

The clergy explain that by working on the day of Trinity, we seem to show our disrespect to God, therefore, if possible, on the days of major holidays, such as Trinity, it is better to postpone all business, including work in the garden.

Of course, there are especially important things that cannot be rescheduled for another day, but it is better to start doing them only after attending the service and praying.

In addition, in the modern world there are many works that must be performed daily, without breaks and weekends, so if a believer cannot visit the temple, he can pray at home or at work.

Is it possible to swim on Trinity

People on the holiday also refrained from bathing in the house - they tried not to come close to the water, even just to wash themselves.

The clergy argue that there is and cannot be any reason not to allow swimming at Trinity. You just shouldn't replace going to church and prayer with a beach holiday, which will certainly be a sin.

You can go to nature after the service, especially since Trinity always falls at the end of May or the beginning of June, when the weather is hot.

What else cannot be done

It was forbidden to hold weddings and celebrate weddings on Trinity, but marriage on this holiday was considered a favorable omen - life together would be long and happy.

On the feast of Trinity, it is forbidden to think about the bad, quarrel with loved ones, take offense at others and wish someone bad.

It was also forbidden to go to the forest on the Holy Trinity. In the old days, it was believed that goblin and mavki (evil forest spirits) watched people there, lured into the depths of the forest and tickled them to death. But the girls who wanted to know their future, violating the ban, still ran the forest to tell fortunes about their betrothed.

Customs and signs

The week before Trinity is called Green - during the week the girls weave wreaths for all family members and bring them home. If the wreath has not wilted by the Trinity, then a person will live happily ever after.

On Trinity, it was customary to decorate rooms with flowers, young grass and green branches, which symbolizes prosperity and the continuation of life. For this, they used branches of birch, rowan, maple, mint, lemon balm - people believed that the more greenery there was in the house on Trinity, the happier the house would become.

In the church during the service, herbs and bouquets of wildflowers were consecrated, which were dried and kept for a whole year as a talisman against the evil eye. After the festive morning service, the site and the house were consecrated with holy water in order to ward off otherworldly forces.

Since ancient times, a cheerful feast has been arranged - close people and relatives were invited to a festive dinner, who were treated to a Trinity loaf, egg dishes, pancakes, pies, jelly. We gave each other funny gifts.

Rusks from Troitsky loaf were kept to be added to the wedding cake for the newlyweds as a sign of happiness and love.

On Trinity, it is useful to walk barefoot on the grass, collect and dry medicinal plants (thyme, mint, lemon balm), which are later used as medicine. Since ancient times, people believed that on this day the earth and greenery have a special healing power.

On Trinity and the following days, they necessarily wore their pectoral cross, as a talisman that would protect against otherworldly creatures.

For girls, it was considered an important custom to put a woven wreath on the water. If the wreath floated far, then you can prepare for the wedding, if it drowns, then there will be trouble, and if it moors to the shore, then it will take a long time to wait for her marriage. And in order to see the betrothed in a dream, it was necessary to put birch branches under the pillow.

On Trinity one should not follow common omens and superstitions, many of which give advice on what supposedly "must not" be done on Trinity (swim, walk in the forest and in the field, work, etc.).

First of all, you need to live this day in a Christian way - go to church, pray, take communion, try to be kind and considerate to your loved ones, spend your free time with them.

For a Christian, there are no prohibitions on certain types of activities on a regular or holiday day, if they do not harm his soul. Neither bathing, nor walking, nor work will hinder a believer if he remembers God.

On Trinity, every believer tries to visit the church, where on this day after the Liturgy, special kneeling prayers are read for the forgiveness of sins, the mercy of God and the bestowal of the grace of the Holy Spirit. But a Christian can only preserve and increase this grace in his life, following the Gospel, and not superstitious rules.

And most importantly - not only on the Holy Trinity, but also on any other day, you cannot keep negative thoughts in yourself, do not wish anyone bad, forgive your family and friends for all insults, step over them and leave them in the past, to find peace of mind and body.

Trinity 2018: when is it celebrated?

The day of the Holy Trinity or Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter. In 2018, Orthodox Christians celebrate Trinity on May 27.

In Ukraine, the Day of the Holy Trinity is considered an important church holiday, therefore, a public holiday is declared on this day. Since the holiday falls on Sunday, Monday 28 May following it will also be a day off. That is, at the end of May, the Ukrainians will have: May 26, 27 and 28, 2018.

In the Catholic tradition, Pentecost and Trinity are separate. The Feast of Trinity is celebrated on the 7th day after Pentecost (57th after Easter). However, 2018 is the same year for Catholics and Orthodox Christians.

The meaning of the feast of the Trinity

It is believed that the apostles, who are also called disciples of Jesus Christ, decided to establish the feast in honor of the Holy Trinity. Thus, they wanted to fix in the memory of people the event that occurred on the fiftieth day after the Ascension of the Lord. It was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended on the holy apostles, which symbolizes the triplicity of God, that is, the existence of three Persons of one essentially God - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in the form of tongues of fire and gave them the ability to speak in different languages in order to carry the teachings of Christ to all nations. Fire, in this case, symbolizes the power to scorch sins and cleanse, sanctify and warm souls.

Pentecost is also considered the birthday of the Christian church.

Traditions of the feast of the Trinity in Ukryn

On the Day of the Holy Trinity, one of the most solemn and beautiful services of the year is performed in Orthodox churches. After the Liturgy, Great Vespers is served, at which stichera are sung, glorifying the descent of the Holy Spirit.

For many centuries, the tradition on Trinity has been preserved to decorate churches and houses with freshly cut greenery, branches and flowers, which symbolize the renewal of the soul. For this reason, the people often call the holiday Green Sunday.

On the occasion of the holiday, it is customary to prepare dishes from eggs, milk, fresh herbs, poultry and fish. They bake loaves, pies, pancakes. Close people and relatives are invited to a festive dinner.

According to folk traditions, leaving the church, people tried to grab the grass from under their feet in order to mix it with the hay, boil it with water and drink it as healing. Some of them made wreaths from the leaves of the trees that stood in the church and used them as amulets.

Among the people, the holiday of Trinity has always been loved by young girls. On this day, it is customary to weave wreaths, dropping them into the river for fortune-telling. Then the girls went to the forest for a walk. The loaf, baked on the occasion of the holiday, was handed out to unmarried girls in the forest. These pieces were dried and stored until the wedding, then kneading the rusks into the dough for the wedding loaf. They believed that they would bring them prosperity and love to a new family.

The Saturday before Pentecost is considered a memorial day. People in churches light candles for the repose of deceased relatives and clean up cemeteries.

Long before the advent of Christianity, the Slavic peoples celebrated Green Week. It marked the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Some pagan rituals and fortune-telling, which are held on the feast of the Trinity, have survived to this day. The customs of ancient times are based on the renewal of life - this is the time when the first leaves appear on trees, flowers bloom. And for the feast of the Trinity of the church, houses were decorated with greenery - a symbol of the growth and renewal of the Christian faith.

Trinity or Pentecost?

The Feast of the Trinity is one of the most beautiful holidays in Orthodoxy. It always falls at a time when the first leaves on the trees begin to bloom. Therefore, people decorate houses and churches on this holiday with green branches of birch, maple, rowan.

Trinity has no fixed date for the celebration. It is scheduled for the fiftieth day after Easter. The Bible says that it was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. The disciples gained the ability to preach the word of Christ. Therefore, this holiday is otherwise called Pentecost or the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Only in the XIV century did they begin to celebrate the feast of the Trinity in Russia. The customs of the tradition on this day have been observed since ancient times. The founder of the holiday was the Monk Sergius of Radonezh.

Old Testament holiday

Pentecost is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated on the 50th day after. According to legend, on this day the people of Israel received the Law of Sinai. Traditionally, in honor of the celebration, entertainment for the people, mass festivities, and sacrifices are organized.

He gave the Law of God to his people. This happened on the fiftieth day after the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. Since then, Pentecost (or Shavuot) has been celebrated every year. In Israel, the holiday of the first harvest and fruits is celebrated on the same day.

When did the Trinity appear in Christianity? Celebration customs and traditions date back to Old Testament Pentecost.

Orthodox holiday

The apostles retired to celebrate the Jewish Pentecost. The Savior, before his martyrdom, promised them a miracle - the coming of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, every day they gathered in one of the Zion chambers.

On the 50th day after the Resurrection, they heard a noise that filled a small space of the house. Flames appeared, and the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. He showed them three hypostases - God the Father (Divine Mind), God the Son (Divine Word), God the Spirit (Holy Spirit). This trinity is the foundation of Christianity on which the Christian faith stands firmly.

People who were not far from the upper room heard a strange noise - the apostles spoke in different languages. Jesus' disciples received amazing abilities - to heal, prophesy and preach in different dialects, which allowed them to carry the word of God to all ends of the world. The apostles visited the Middle East, India, Asia Minor. We visited Crimea and Kiev. All the disciples, except for John, were martyred - they were executed by opponents of Christianity.

One God is The custom of the church feast began in the morning. The whole family went to church for divine services. Then people returned home. They arranged a gala dinner, went to visit, congratulated friends on a bright holiday, gave gifts.

Slavic holiday

In our country, the holiday of the Trinity began to be celebrated only 300 years after the baptism of Rus. Before that, the Slavs were pagans. But even today there are ceremonies, signs that originated in those days.

Until Trinity, this day was considered the border between spring and summer. Its name is Semik (Green Week), or Triglav. According to the pagan religion, three deities ruled over all mankind - Perun, Svarog, Svyatovit. The latter is the keeper of light and human energy. Perun is a defender of truth and warriors. Svarog is the creator of the universe.

In Semik, people arranged merry festivities, danced in round dances. Houses were decorated with the first greenery, from which medicinal tinctures and decoctions were then prepared.

So from a pagan celebration a church holiday arose - Trinity. Customs, signs of ancient times are still relevant among the people. For example, the greenery that adorned the church at Pentecost was taken home and dried. It was sewn into canvas bags. This sachet served as a talisman at home.

Celebration traditions

How is the feast of the Trinity? Most holiday customs begin with cleaning the house. Only after the room sparkles with cleanliness, the women decorated the rooms with green branches and flowers. They are a symbol of fertility, wealth.

The hostesses prepared a festive table - they cooked pies and gingerbread, cooked jelly. There is no fast on this day, so any food is allowed for the Orthodox. In churches on Trinity, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, and immediately after it - the evening. During it, kneeling prayers are read. The priests ask for the granting of grace to all those present, for the bestowal of wisdom and reason on the believers.

After the service, people sit down at the festive table, invite guests, give gifts and congratulate each other. Traditionally, it was customary to woo on this day. It was believed that if the matchmaking takes place on Trinity, and the wedding on Pokrov, a happy life awaits the young family.

How is Trinity celebrated in other parts of the world? Traditions, customs, rituals of different countries are united by the festive service. And in England there are even religious processions on this day. In Italy, rose petals are scattered from the ceiling of the temple. In France, trumpets are blown during divine services, which symbolizes the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Folk customs on Trinity

According to popular legends, mermaids wake up on Pentecost. In this regard, the villagers have several customs.

  • In the villages, they made a stuffed mermaid, danced around it during festivities. Then it was torn into small pieces and scattered across the field.
  • Before going to bed, women ran through the village with a broomstick to protect themselves from the mermaids.
  • One girl was disguised as a mermaid, taken out into the field and thrown into a crop. Then everyone fled to their homes.

What other folk practices is the Trinity famous for? Traditions, customs, rituals consisted in driving away evil spirits from the gates of the house. According to legend, on this day, a water one woke up, and the villagers burned fires along the coast to ward off evil spirits.

Much attention was paid to decorating the house. Only branches of maple, birch, mountain ash, oak could protect people, give them strength and health.

Another custom was to water the branches and flowers that were in the temple with your tears. Girls and women tried to cry harder so that drops of tears fell on the greenery. This method helped the ancestors to get rid of the summer drought and autumn crop failure.

First day

All festive events were divided into 3 days. The first was called Green Sunday. On this day, the icons were decorated with birch branches, a special prayer was said for the Trinity.

Festivities were held in forests and fields. People danced, played, sang songs. The girls wove wreaths and lowered them down the river. Such fortune-telling helped to find out what fate awaited in the coming year.

People commemorated deceased relatives. At the cemetery, crosses and monuments were swept with a birch broom to ward off evil spirits. They left treats to the deceased on the graves. On this night, according to folk legends, prophetic dreams were dreamed.

Second day

Klechalny Monday is the second day of the celebration of Pentecost. People hurried to church in the morning. After the service, the priests walked through the fields with blessings. This was done in order to protect the crop from drought, rainfall and hail.

Third day

Bogodukhov's day is most celebrated by girls. They arrange festivities, games, fortune-telling. According to the folk tradition, the fun is "Driving the Poplar". The most beautiful girl was dressed up, decorated with greenery and wreaths - she played the role of Poplar. Then the youth took Poplar to their homes, and each owner presented her with a delicious treat or gift.

Holiday symbol

There is still a birch curling ritual. During the process, the girls made a wish of good health to their mother and other relatives. Or, while curling a birch, they thought about a beloved young man - thus tying his thoughts and thoughts to themselves.

During the festivities, a small birch was decorated with ribbons, flowers flew into it. After round dance chants, they cut it down and began a triumphal procession through the village. An elegant birch tree was carried around the entire village, attracting good luck to its inhabitants.

In the evening, the ribbons were removed from the tree and the traditional sacrifice was arranged. The branches were "buried" in the field, and the birch itself was drowned in a reservoir. So people asked for the sending of a bountiful harvest and protection from the spirits.

Early dew was collected on Trinity - it was considered a powerful medicine against ailments and ailments. Such rituals existed among our ancestors. Some of them can be found today. And what cannot be done on Trinity?

What is forbidden to do at Pentecost

On this holiday, it was strictly forbidden to work in the garden or around the house. Therefore, the zealous housewives carried out a general cleaning up to Trinity. And on the holiday itself, they only decorated the house and prepared a hearty meal.

What other prohibitions are there? What not to do on Trinity? All repairs around the house are best left for another day. You cannot sew. Do not wash, cut or dye your hair.

On this day, you cannot think about bad things or talk about someone in a negative way. It is forbidden to swim - otherwise, in the near future, the disobedient will die (according to one version, he will be tickled by mermaids). And the one who remained alive after swimming on Trinity was declared a sorcerer.

Do not be offended, swear on this day - Trinity is a bright holiday. Signs and customs (what you can't and what you can do) - it all comes down to prayer and kind words. Trinity is a holiday of renewal of life, therefore, you should surround yourself only with positive things on this day.

Parent's Saturday

The day before Trinity began. People went to the cemetery, commemorated deceased relatives.

For a long time, a memorial dinner was prepared on parental Saturday - cutlery was set for the deceased. The deceased was invited to a meal.

The bathhouse was heated that day. And after the whole family had washed, they left water and a broom for the deceased.

On Trinity parental Saturday, suicides are commemorated, they ask for the repose of their souls. It is read on Trinity. But the Holy Church claims that this is a delusion - suicides cannot find rest after death. Therefore, only in home prayer can you ask for them.

Signs at Pentecost

The Trinity is rich in beliefs and omens. The customs and traditions of the holiday carry many centuries-old omens.

  1. Rain on Pentecost - to an abundance of mushrooms and close warmth.
  2. If the birch is fresh on the third day after the holiday - to wet haymaking.
  3. They woo Trinity, marry the Pokrov - to love and harmony in the family.
  4. To attract wealth to the house, you need to cover several
  5. Heat on Trinity - by the dry summer.

The whole week of the celebration was called Rusal Week. Thursday was considered especially important - on this day, mermaids tried to lure people into the water. Therefore, in the evenings, people tried not to leave the house. It was forbidden to swim all week. And you should definitely carry wormwood with you - this herb scared away evil spirits.

Today, Trinity is celebrated in nature, with songs and fun. Customs, signs of ancient times become irrelevant and gradually disappear. But until now, people decorate their homes with greenery so that peace, tranquility, happiness, health and prosperity reign in it. And the girls carry wreaths to the reservoirs and, holding their breath, let them float into the water: where the wreath floats, from there to wait for the betrothed, and if it hits the shore, you know, it's not destiny to get married this year ...

Trinity occurs on the 50th day after Easter - i.e. in 2019 on June 16. The holiday always falls in May or June, so on this day it is customary to decorate churches and houses with fresh greens, especially birch branches.

About what you can and cannot do on the Holy Trinity and why, comments of clergymen, a selection table on the most urgent matters - all this can be found below.

What not to do on Trinity

A large number of beliefs have spread among the people. For example, in villages for a long time, it was customary to go to water bodies, to forests, to lead round dances around bonfires. And the girls did go into an "ambush" - they hid in the thickets on the coast, posing as attractive mermaids who must certainly seduce their betrothed.

Church canons do not presuppose such actions. Therefore, the first thing that cannot be done in the Trinity is to follow pagan rituals, to guess, to bewitch the betrothed, etc.

However, this does not mean that the girl is forbidden to dream and pray for her future family. The correct emotional attitude, faith in good changes - this is what helps us in a difficult life. And of course, sincere prayer creates a kind of energy impulse that can embody any good desire.

It is intuitively clear that you cannot do ordinary work on Trinity, which greatly distracts from spiritual affairs. For example, you should not plan a trip to the country, or even more repair, construction, etc. This is hard physical labor, which, moreover, will take a lot of time.

It is considered a sin not to come to church only because household chores have been distracted from the temple, which can be easily transferred to another time.

It is also quite clear what else cannot be done on Trinity. For example, on this day you should not swear, sort things out, go to an obvious conflict. Even being annoyed, offended, impatient is also not the best behavior.

We all live on earth, and each has its own weaknesses. However, it is better to just show will and refrain from any negative statements on both Sunday and Monday (Spirit Day).

Often they ask questions about what cannot be done on the Holy Trinity, meaning the opportunity to go to the cemetery and visit the deceased. The church does not favor this - it is better to choose a different time.

For example, the second Tuesday after Easter is the parent's day. Or the last one, which is also called parental (Troitskaya). The fact is that the holiday is associated with the revival of life, the onset of a fertile time.

The cemetery, of course, has a different energy - it sets you up for sad thoughts. And one can hardly feel the festive atmosphere being at the grave of a loved one.

And also, what cannot be done on the Holy Trinity (as well as on other holidays) is to remember people who themselves committed suicide. In general, the church never commemorates them with rare exceptions. However, praying for these souls can and should be done at home. This question is very delicate, and each person can consult with a priest in order to get rid of the emotional burden.

Of course, what else cannot be done on the Trinity is to indulge in earthly passions. Alcohol consumption, plentiful feasts in their own way distract from the great day. It is better for a believer to abstain from some natural needs, including intimacy. However, this rule should be seen as advice and not an outright prohibition.

An interesting fact is that it is believed that you cannot marry Trinity. In many ways, this is true - the wedding does not take place on the days of 12 major holidays (Easter, Christmas, Trinity and others).

But there is a more personal reason here - since this date always falls on Sunday, most registry offices simply do not get into: their employees also have the right to a well-deserved day off.

Thus, if you answer the question of what can and cannot be done on Trinity very briefly, it will turn out like this (we quote the commentary of the rector of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul - Priest Yakov Zaitsev).

What can you do on Trinity

Of course, the first thing to do, like on any other holiday, is to go to church on Trinity. Moreover, on this day it is especially beautiful there: the clergy put on green clothes, and birch branches and other greenery.

Plants symbolize the rebirth of nature, the final arrival of summer, and most importantly - the life-giving power of God, who even after the death of his own Son sent his helper to earth - the Holy Spirit.

Another answer to the question of what can be done on Trinity is connected with birch branches. Traditionally, parishioners try to consecrate them in churches, as is done with willows exactly one week before Easter. You can do this as you wish - i.e. the church does not make any strict requirements.

If you happen to consecrate several branches, they should certainly be brought home and placed next to the icon, in a bright corner of the house. There is a popular belief that they protect the house from accidents and set the whole family in a peaceful mood.

The church also tries to decorate icons - this can be done with any greenery, including wildflowers.

The rest of the day can be spent on your own. Usually believers gather with their families, invite relatives and friends to visit, on the feast of the Holy Trinity, or try to do some kind of good deeds on Trinity and in the next two days.

WHY THE TRINITY CANNOT KNEEL

Indeed, kneeling prayer is permitted only from the day of Pentecost. The corresponding commentary is given by Hieromonk Constantine.

What not to do on the second and third days of Trinity

Immediately you need to make a reservation that the celebration is celebrated within three days:

  1. The Trinity itself is celebrated on Sunday - this is the 50th day after Easter, therefore the date is also called Pentecost.
  2. Monday is the Day of Spirits, which is often also called the Trinity.
  3. The last day of the celebration is Tuesday.

Questions are often asked about what cannot be done on the second and third days of Trinity. The answers to them are roughly the same as those described above. Indeed, the celebration lasts three days.

Moreover, the Holy Spirit is glorified especially solemnly on Monday - the Day of Spirits. And Tuesday ends the celebration - this is the third day of Trinity. Of course, we cannot give up work and other pressing matters at once within three days, with very rare exceptions.

But if possible, you should at least visit the church. And of course, it is important to take special care of your loved ones. Why not, for example, organize a family evening on Sunday, and on Monday and Tuesday visit other relatives, friends who, perhaps, have been waiting for you for a long time?

There is no such person who would not be pleased with the attention to himself. Needless to say, the Trinity can be an additional reason to seize this moment and do a good deed. It is better to adhere to the established rules in order to spend the holiday with a light heart and pleasant thoughts.

For simplicity and convenience, we have prepared for you a summary table of what you can or cannot do on Trinity:

action it is possible or not
wash, swim, get a haircut according to popular beliefs it is categorically impossible (mermaids will "take away" vital energy), but in fact, you can wash and put yourself in order, just not instead of going to church
go to the cemetery extremely undesirable, since the holiday is bright, life-giving; it is better to do this on the eve of Trinity Saturday or after the celebration of Spiritual Day on Monday, i.e. not earlier than Wednesday (Trinity is celebrated for 3 days)
work in the garden extremely undesirable - it is hard physical labor that takes a lot of energy; it is absolutely impossible to go to the country house instead of going to church; it is better to start work no earlier than Wednesday (on Spirits day, according to popular belief, the earth is the birthday girl)
to work at work it is possible, because it is a professional duty, an earthly duty of every person; it is advisable to find time to go to church on Trinity or on Spirits day
go to church it is possible and necessary - it is better to come both on Sunday and on the Day of Spirits (Monday); it would be right to visit the temple the day before (Trinity Saturday) to commemorate all dead Christians
doing housework (cleaning, sewing) it is possible, but only as needed: planning general cleaning, repairs and other large-scale cases is not worth it
negotiate, sort things out highly undesirable; being angry and annoyed, being offended at the same time is a sin at all
woo, propose it is possible and necessary - according to popular belief, if you get married to the Trinity, the marriage will be long and happy
marry undesirable - the church does not crown on this day, besides, the registry offices are closed; better to register next weekend
walk, have fun it is possible, but only in moderation: alcoholic libations, immodest parties on such a day are excluded

Thus, in many ways, a person decides for himself what to do in the Trinity and after it, and what should be abandoned. One thing is clear: we must live this holiday so that the conscience, as they say, is clear.

Each person has his own moral guidelines that will tell him whether he is right at a given moment or not. And if there are any doubts left, they can always be resolved by sharing thoughts with loved ones or with priests.
