Tver province was established under Paul the First in 1796 on the lands belonging to the governorship of the same name. The Tver governorship, in turn, was established during the administrative reform of Catherine II in 1775 from the lands that were previously part of the Tver province of St. Petersburg (former Ingermanland), then the Novgorod province. Throughout the subsequent pre-revolutionary history of the Tver province, the composition of its counties and their borders changed several times - for example, under Paul the First in 1796, the counties of Vesyegonsky, Kalyazinsky, Korchevsky were abolished, again restored under Alexander the Great (1802). After the territorial transformations of Alexander the First, the province remained within its certain boundaries. The Tver region is somewhat larger than the province, mainly due to the territories of the Belsk district of the Smolensk province and part of the Pskov province, annexed to the Tver region.
